Writer's picture: Teresa MurrayTeresa Murray

Charles "Anthony" Ellis completed his Grand Challenges Scholars Program and presented his project to students and faculty involved in the GCSP program at Louisiana Tech University. The National Academy of Engineers runs this nationwide program. They have identified several challenges for our plant. Students select a challenge and then complete a number of academic,, research and service tasks. Anthony's Grand Challenge was Reverse Engineering the Brain. He worked in my lab on a project that studied the effects of stroke and traumatic brain injury on neural cells. He also participated in the NeuroNEM Research Experience for Undergraduates program and learned to evaluate magnetoencephalogry recordings of people with drug-resistant epilepsy at the University of Alabama - Birmingham. He continued this work in Dr. Leon Iasemidis lab during his senior year. The photo shows me with Anthony after he received his GCSP Medallion. Anthony is now in an international PhD program at Georgia Tech University and a university in China. Do great things, Anthony!
